My thoughts about entrepreneurship and inovation

Growing up I was surrounded by many entrepreneurs. My family specifically has always been adventurous and willing to take risks. My father's family left Portugal when my father was 8 years old and relocated to Mozambique in search of better opportunities. And on the other side my mother's family did the same but instead explored the opportunities Angola had to offer. Both families created a successful life in both coasts of Africa and when the unexpected civil wars began in the 70s they returned to Portugal and less than two years later they set off to the USA to start over. My father purchased a Liquor store and my grandfather started a dispatching and trading company. Thirty years later at the age of 84 my grandfather's company is still in business. There are very few people in my family that do not have a business of their own. It didn't hit me until I wrote this last sentence that the Portuguese immigrant is abnormally more entrepreneurial in nature than the rest of the population. To take this a step further, almost every Portuguese family I know owns at least one rental property. I have to believe there's a very obvious reason for this, I just don't know what it is.

I quickly researched this phenomena and plan on reading the following studies to research this further. Now I am very interested in this:

  • Metropolitan Characteristics and Entrepreneurship among Immigrants and Ethnic Groups in Canada
  • Provincetown: From Pilgrim Landing to Gay Resort
  • Immigration and entrepreneurship: culture, capital, and ethnic networks
  • Multiple Layers of Time and Space: The Construction of Class, Ethnicity, and Nationalism of Portuguese Immigrants
  • Open for business: migrant entrepreneurship in OECD countries
  • Cultural resources and ethnic entrepreneurship: A Case study of the Portuguese Real Estate Industry in Toronto
So after this quick search I realize I was destined to start my business in Real Estate.
